Founded in 1888 by German immigrant Herman Schoel,
Schoel has played a meaningful role in the growth and development of Birmingham and communities throughout the Southeast for more than 137 years. After emigrating to the United States, Herman joined the Elyton Land Company, where he became the third registered land surveyor in the State of Alabama and produced the first map of Birmingham. His work established the foundation for a firm defined by technical excellence, integrity, and long-term commitment to the communities it serves.
Herman’s vision was carried forward by Walter Schoel, Sr., followed by Walter Schoel, Jr., whose leadership expanded the firm’s reputation and capabilities throughout Alabama. Today, the family legacy continues under Walter Schoel, III, who serves as Chief Executive Officer, alongside fifth-generation leaders Taylor Schoel, President, and Brooks Schoel, Chief Financial Officer. Together, they continue to build upon more than 137 years of family leadership, guiding Schoel as a multidisciplinary land development firm while remaining committed to the values of integrity, technical excellence, and lasting client relationships established in 1888.
