Project Description
The Living River Camp and Conference Center is an environmentally sensitive 440 acre site with over two miles of frontage on the Cahaba River in Bibb and Shelby Counties. The Presbytery of Shepards and Lapsley envisioned a camp and conference center to host all age summer camp programs, year-round retreats and leadership training conferences. Living River is a place for recreation and leisure outings and a setting to experience nature and learn environmental stewardship. The program called for a general camp area, Youth Camp, Adult Camp, and Conference Center. This secluded piece of property required extension of off-site utilities from miles away, the construction of an on-site sanitary treatment plant, and the improvement of several miles of unimproved road to access the camp. In addition, canoe put-ins and take-outs have been constructed to access the Cahaba River and have required extensive environmental studies including a COE Nationwide Permit and Aquatic Studies of Endangered Species with the Cahaba River. In consultation with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, two endangered species were identified and Fish and Wildlife issued Biological Opinion. We received concurrence from Fish and Wildlife on the proposed design elements and will provide ongoing monitoring of species population in the area.
