Project Description
Mountain Brook Village is a retail and commercial hub for the city of Mountain Brook, AL. In addition, the Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, single family residences, and apartment complexes are located adjacent to Mountain Brook Village. Due to restrictions in the bridge openings and within the stream channel, some parts of the village and adjacent properties flooded regularly, causing a significant economic impact. The purpose of this project was to study the existing flood conditions and develop a plan to reduce flooding. In addition to developing the plan, we were tasked with designing improvements, which included redesigning bridges, and obtaining a Conditional Letter of Map Revision and Letter of Map Revision from FEMA. The project was partially funded through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Schoel obtained the needed Corps of Engineers Nationwide Permit coverage for the project as well as coordinated with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Alabama Historical Commission, and ADEM to provide environmental clearance for the flood improvement project.
