Project Description
The City of Vestavia Hills recruited Schoel to help them identify ways to mitigate flooding in the Cahaba Heights business district and surrounding neighborhoods. Schoel was able to identify and attain funding from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) to create Meadowlawn Park. There were three main elements of the Meadowlawn Park project:
1) Restoration of the Little Shades Creek to reflect historical conditions.
2) Improvement to the floodplain to increase flood storage.
3) Construction of a wetland within the remnant channel to provide additional flood storage.
This project provides better water quality benefits and is a public space for the community. In 2018, Meadowlawn Park received the Watershed Conservation Development Award from the Cahaba River Society.
