Project Description

Located adjacent to the Cahaba River, this 80 acre retail development contains 320,000 square feet of shops. The Shops of Grand River was planned and designed with environmental stewardship in mind. LID components such as biowales and rain gardens were employed throughout the project site to create a project capable of LEED and Audubon certification.

Schoel’s involvement in the project earned the company the 2011 Conservation Development Award for Innovative, Effective Stormwater Practices by the Cahaba River Society.

Schoel has continued with planning and design for future phases that included site and utility infrastructure design, BMP design, and Corps of Engineers Permitting and Mitigation Implementation. Additionally, Schoel designed over a mile of gravity sanitary sewer collection system and a duplex suction lift pump station, currently operating at 320 gpm with planned incremental upgrades to 770 gpm and an ultimate capacity of 1100 gpm. Schoel worked closely with the local utility to model the effects of this new development on the current infrastructure and also designed an upgrade to the existing downstream flooded suction pump station.
